Portraiture in Art

What is a portrait?

•A work of art that represents an individual.
•This can be shown by illustrating the sitters’:
–Physical appearance
–Position in society
–Character or virtues
–Hobbies, Interests or Profession
–Or some combination of the above!

 

-Consider what the following portraits tell us about the individual sitter and time period when the portrait was painted. Remember that over the centuries what is considered a “life-like” portrait has changed.
