Charles Willson Peale                     (1741-1827)

  • Born in Maryland, 1741.

  • Moved to Philadelphia in 1776 to paint portraits.

  • During the Revolution he served in the Pennsylvania militia.

  • Founded America’s first museum (in Philadelphia).

  • Lived in Germantown for a short time– he purchased Belfield (on La Salle’s main campus) in 1810.

  • One of the co-founders of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA).
