Born in Maryland, 1741.

Moved to Philadelphia in 1776 to paint portraits.

During the Revolution he served in the Pennsylvania militia.

Founded America’s first museum (in Philadelphia).

Lived in Germantown for a short time– he purchased Belfield (on La Salle’s main campus) in 1810.

One of the co-founders of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA).
