Modern Persian

Opaque Watercolor, Gold

Gift of Katherine Burke

Current Condition of Artwork:

Adhesive residue in lower left of verso. Losses to lower left edge, bottom left corner, and upper left edge. Minor surface grime. Random minor accretions. White adhesive spots across top center (possibly from the linen tape pattern). Minor abrasions/skinning. Insect damage all around losses and minor surface grazing to support. 1/4" fracture in top corner, 1/2" tear between figures in the lower right, and a 1" tear along the lower left edge. Undulations overall. Severe diagonal crease with right corner to bottom corner; minor creasing elsewhere. Cleavage/flaking and cracking along creases. Some mechanical damage. Bleeding/blurring in some inscriptions. Red at bottom corner is friable/powdery.

Conservation Treatment Proposed:

  • Consolidate flaking paint.
  • Reduce accretions.
  • Mend tears and fractures. Reinforce creases as needed.
  • Locally humidify and flatten creases.
  • Fill losses (optional).

Estimated Cost of Treatment:      $1000.00
