A Lady Dressed In European Fashion

A Lady Dressed In European Fashion, Seated on a Throne and Accompanied by a Maid

Opaque Watercolor

Gift of Dr. Alvin O. Bellak

Current Condition of Artwork:

Verso has eight pressure sensitive tapes (two trans, two masking, four fibrous) and a patch at the bottom edge. Crude patch across bottom over pressure sensitive tape. Adhesive residue with tapes and patch. Random minor accretions. Extensive losses across bottom edge of support. Extensive losses throughout image. Minor surface grime to support. Severe skinning/abrasions overall to support, especially on bottom edge. Extensive abrasions/burnishing along bottom edge and top right corner of image. Tears/fractures to top corner and lower left edge of support. Stains in upper left edge of support, with pressure sensitive adhesive stains in upper left and right corners, and lower right corner. Stains to image along upper left edge. Pucker/bulge at center of support. Delamination along patch at bottom of support. Inpainted onto patch at bottom. Creases in upper right corner of support. Extensive cracking from soft paint in image. Extensive cleavage/flaking to image.

Conservation Treatment Proposed:

  • Consolidate flaking paint.
  • Reduce pressure sensitive tapes, residues mechanically as safely as possible -- may require solvents/suction table for sunk adhesive in upper right and left corners and bottom right corner. Note: patch will have to be partially reduced at lower right corner to expose tape.
  • Consider reducing entire paper patch for tape reduction, followed by tone/fill of loss along bottom edge (optional).

Estimated Cost of Treatment:      $1,500.00
