Opaque Watercolor, Gold

Gift of Dr. Alvin O. Bellak

Current Condition of Artwork:

Five pressure sensitive tape strips and paper tape on verso leaving adhesive residue. Support losses to lower right corner and top layers. Random minor accretions. Minor surface grime. Abrasions/skinning along support margins and edges. Tear/fracture along right edge. Delamination along all edges, especially the right. Minor undulations overall. Diagonal crease in upper right corner. Paper has soft surface and limp hand. Paint losses, cracking, and cleavage/flaking associated with mechanical damage along right edge. Particulate accretions across greens and black, possibly from mold. Any possible mold is inactive.

Conservation Treatment Proposed:

  • Reduce mold with vacuum aspiration.
  • Mechanically reduce pressure sensitive tapes and adhesives.
  • Mend tears, reinforce tattered edge and readhere delaminating support layers.
  • Fill/tone losses to lower right corner (optional).

Estimated Cost of Treatment:      $1,000.00
