The Mythical Bird Garuda, Holding a Flower

Opaque Watercolor, Ink

Gift of Dr. Alvin O. Bellak

Current Condition of Artwork:

Pressure sensitive tape hinges to upper left and right of verso; pressure sensitive tape mend in left corner of verso, leaving adhesive residue. Embrittlement of support locally due to corrosive media. Random minor accretions. Losses to bottom right edge of support and minor random losses to image. Moderate surface grime with media transfer from adjacent sheet. Abrasions/skinning along edges of support and minor abrasions throughout image. Grazing and wormholes along right edge of support and image. Stains in left corner of support and left corner edge of image. Minor tears/fractures along tattered edges of support. Creases/folds to bottom left corner and right corner edge of support. Minor undulations to support. Evidence of Cu+ (Copper I) green degredation from adjacent sheets. Greens of image darkened by weakend support. Cracking and cleavage/flaking to image. Pigment particles are very coarsely ground. Silver pigment is friable/powdery.

Conservation Treatment Proposed:

  • Consolidate flaking paint.
  • Reduce pressure sensitive tape and adhesive residue.
  • Mean tear in left corner and reinforce tattered edges, creases, and wormholes as needed.
  • Fill/tone losses (optional).

Estimated Cost of Treatment:      $500.00
