Transparent Watercolor

Gift of Dr. Alvin O. Bellak

Current Condition of Artwork:

Verso attachments include three pressure sensitive, two linen, and three paper tape strips. Adhesive residue with backing and tapes. Paper tapes extend beyond support edge at left and bottom. Extreme embrittlement locally from corrosive media. Random minor accretions. Large loss to bottom right corner, smaller losses to upper right corner and bottom left corner. Image losses where support is lost and in greens. Abrasion/skinning along edges and both supports. Some losses to support and image possible from insect damage. Tears fractures throughout primary support with some lifting. Delamination between primary and secondary supports. Minor undulations between supports. Creases in upper left and right corners. Corrosive pigment in Cu+ (Copper I) green, making it appear light brown.

Conservation Treatment Proposed:

  • Reduce pressure sensitive tapes and adhesives mechanically.
  • Mend fractures as safely as possible.
  • Readhere lifting support edges.
  • Consider toned overlay onto secondary support in areas of loss (optional).
  • Reduce linen and paper tapes from verso (optional).

Estimated Cost of Treatment:      $500.00
