Current Condition of Artwork:

Three pressure sensitive and five linen tapes across top edge of verso, leaving adhesive residue. Mended fracture in top corner from previous repairs. Moderate accretions overall. Moderate surface grime to support. Support losses to top edge, especially the top corner. Extensive losses to image throughout, especially pearls. Abrasions/skinning along edges of support. Abrasions especially along margins of image. Insect damage to support in bottom right corner; extensive loss in gold floral overlay at top. Extensive grazing and loss overall to image. Tears/fractures to top corner (mended) and upper left edge (open) of support. Delamination to gold overlay panel at top and along edges. Stains overall on verso, especially on edges; visible areas of staining on recto. Stains to image in top corner, lower left corner, and mottled at bottom left edge. Creases to bottom left corner of support. Extensive cracking throughout image. Extensive active flaking to image, with loose elements. Surface of image is extremely vulnerable.

Conservation Treatment Proposed:

  • Consolidate paint, surface elements.
  • Reduce pressure sensitive tapes, residue mechanically as safely as possible.
  • Mend tear at upper left.
  • Fill/tone support losses (optional).
