Scribners Magazine Cover August Fiction Number

Wilfred J. Jones

Scribners Magazine Cover August Fiction Number, c. 1916

Gouache on Paper

78-D-127

Gift of Mrs. Elizabeth Jones Greenhall (Artist's Daughter)

Wilfred Jones was a 20th century Philadelphia painter and drawer. Jones was a regular contributor to Scribner’s Magazine, producing numerous cover images for them. His cover images are marked by bold colors, thick outlining, and two dimensional shapes.

Current Condition of the Artwork:

The acidic illustration board is moderately deteriorated and brittle. There is a loss to the bottom right corner, a “crunched” top right corner and a small loss to the bottom corner. Liquid staining throughout media, some results from the original application of paint and some small splatters appear to be later damage.

Conservation Treatment Proposed:

  • The artwork will remain fragile and should be stored on a board support and handled with care. Media staining is not significantly visually disruptive and does not require attention.
  • Clean surface and remove accretions.
  • Remove tape/mending.
  • Mend/reinforce.
  • All materials used will be appropriate and conservation quality. All work will adhere to the highest standards of the field.

Estimated Cost of Treatment:  $400.00
